Money Transfer Service Launched
Oct, 2006

Carpenter Group and Morris Hedstrom teamed up with Westpac Banking Corporation to launch Moneygram money transfer services at Morris Hedstrom supermarkets throughout Fiji.

The service was officially launched at MH Superfresh supermarket in Tamavua by the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, Savenaca Narube. In his speech, Narube welcomed the initiative and said it was encouraging to see Moneygram expand its business in Fiji.

He said the expansion of the service to MH stores will make it convenient, efficient and simple for people to send and receive remittances from abroad. The initiative is timely as personal remittances are becoming an important source of foreign exchange reaching $311 million in 2005 from $43 million in 1995.

Carpenters Fiji Managing Director, Roger Powell said Moneygram was the perfect choice for the company. He said the service will be available initially at 12 MH supermarkets.

Moneygram’s regional manager, Janice Ong was also present at the launch and said that money transfer would now be more accessible and convenient for the people of Fiji. She said as more Fijians work and lived abroad, more money will be sent to Fiji. She said that people now will be able to transact business after normal banking hours and during weekends whenever MH stores are open for business

The service increases the current portfolio of services available at MH supermarkets. Currently Billpay services are offered for payment of debtors and hire purchase accounts of other divisions of Carpenters and Fiji Electricity Authority bills.
